How is Balloon Sinuplasty Done?

With the catheter in position, a tiny balloon at its tip will be slowly inflated. With carefully controlled expansion, the sinus opening is widened. Once the passage is expanded, the area is flushed with saline solution to clear mucus and debris. Then, the balloon is deflated and steadily pulled out, permanently enlarging the sinus opening. The overall process creates less discomfort, bleeding, and swelling, compared to traditional surgeries. Because of its minimally-invasive nature, it is generally performed in the office with local anesthesia.
Recovery After Balloon Sinuplasty
On top of being a quick procedure to perform, the recovery process is also relatively short, since there are no incisions or tissue removal. Though, patients may still experience mild discomfort over the next few weeks. There may also be temporary congestion, light swelling, or nasal pressure during the first days. This is perfectly normal, as the internal passages have been slightly altered, and the body needs time to get used to it. These symptoms should resolve quickly as function returns and drainage restores.
Patients can care for themselves by the next day after the procedure, and most patients are cleared to return to work and perform other daily activities within a few days after the procedure, though exercise and lifting should be avoided until fully recovered. Everyone has different healing times, but improvements in sinus symptoms should be noticeable within 2 weeks for most patients.
