What Causes Sinus Pressure

Every year, millions of Americans struggle with sinus pressure and even pain. It manifests around the eyes, nose, and forehead, acting as the source of many seasonal grievances. Many people don’t know exactly what brings on their sinus problems, but the Charleston Sinus Center hopes to educate and inform so you can find relief with the right treatments. So, what exactly causes pressure to build in the sinuses?

The Charleston Sinus Center sees many patients with varying sinus concerns. While there are quite a few causes for their problems, here are the 5 most common ones:

  • Allergies
  • Seasonal changes
  • Environmental pollutants
  • Viral infection
  • Sinus infection

Allergies & Seasonal Changes

Everyone reacts to allergens in their own unique ways. Some people experience difficult breathing, redness, and sneezing fits. For others, it might bring about congestion and pressure throughout the sinuses. One of the biggest culprits is hay fever, which can be spurred on by pollen, pet dander, dust, and mold. When these allergens are inhaled, the immune system mistakes them for threats and releases histamines, which leads to inflammation, swelling, and mucus buildup. These all clog the system and result in facial pressure.

The changing of the seasons also causes problems for a lot of us. Going from a humid summer to dry winter months can dry out the nasal passages and thicken mucus. This makes the sinuses more prone to congestion.

If your sinus issues are related to allergies or seasonal changes, there are a few things you can do. For starters, closing the windows and using air conditioning will help protect you from outside allergens. After spending time outdoors, you can also shower to clean off any pollen that might be clinging to your skin.  Consider using a humidifier during the dry seasons and stay well-hydrated throughout the year.

Environmental Pollutants

Unlike seasonal allergies, environmental pollutants are present all year round. These are things like secondhand smoke, dust mites, and rodent droppings. Because these irritants can be found in just about any building (especially homes), ongoing exposure is likely. For sensitive individuals, this can cause chronic nasal inflammation, postnasal drip, and headaches.

To counteract these irritants, make sure to wash your bed sheets once a week at minimum, and consider using an allergen-proof mattress and pillow cover. The house should also be vacuumed regularly. Many pet-owners sleep with their pets on the bed. While you might not want to hear it, pet dander could also be a cause for your concerns, so limiting their access to the bedroom can help.

Viral Infections & Sinus Infections

The common cold, a viral infection, is one of the biggest culprits in triggering sinus problems. These kinds of infections back up the nasal passages and sinus cavities, preventing mucus from properly draining. This buildup inevitably leads to pressure, congestion, and even pain in more severe examples. Usually, symptoms can last for one to two weeks, as your body fights off the infection. But if inflammation persists and mucus cannot drain, the sinuses can become a breeding ground for bacteria. This leads to sinus infection and more intense nasal pressure.

Generally, treatment for viral infections consists of relieving various symptoms while your body handles the rest. Staying hydrated and well-rested can help by thinning the mucus, which lets it drain easier. Many patients find that nasal sprays and saline rinses help quite a bit. You may find that it eases congestion. Short-term use of over-the-counter decongestants can also bring relief.

If symptoms last longer than 10 days, worsen, or include a high fever, the Charleston Sinus Center recommends an immediate evaluation. This will determine if a bacterial sinus infection is present. In such cases, we may recommend additional treatment like antibiotics. The quicker you seek care, the quicker you can recover.
